BROADWAY WORLD

Mel Brooks' The Producers

The cast is uniformly top notch, fully embracing the over the top absurdity of the piece. Neel Patrick Edwards infuses his Max Bialystock with every last drop of energy he can possibly muster. And then amps it up. Combining [the character's] cynicism with sparkling personality and crisp comic timing, Edwards makes the most of this showstopping role.

CAROLINA CURTAIN CALL

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

“Hunchback” obviously contains some religious devotional music, and overtones, but the Church does not escape Hugo’s brutal pen, painting our antagonist Dom Claude Frollo (Neel Patrick Edwards) as a brutal hypocrite, proselytizing to Quasimodo about resisting the carnal desires of adolescence, all the while blatantly (and aggressively) pursuing Esmeralda. Young Edwards embodies a man about three times his age here. His presence and persona in this dramatic turn is piercingly real and he handily dominates the proceeding whenever he is in a scene. Frankly, it’s been a long time since I have seen an actor just outright almost walk away with a show on this scale.
